Our History
From 2013, Ms Mary Cheah wanted to help children from new immigrant or under-privileged families who could not afford private English tuition classes. She originally wanted to rent commercial premises in Tai Kok Tsui, Sham Shui Po or Mong Kok areas to offer English tuition classes for 8 to 10 kids. During this stage, she discussed frequently with Mr Eddie Mui (Solicitor, one of the three Trustees of SOAR).
Mr Mui thought this could only alleviate the English learning problem of those children but not their other problems in daily lives. Instead, Mr Mui suggested offering English tuition classes inside Mongkok Church. Each child who attended English classes will attend religious study classes at the same time, and their parents will also join the Parent Support Group to know about Christianity, and to have love and hope. The 生命互補 ministry in Mongkok Church started in 2014.
Mr Mui adopted the name 生命互補 because he believed this ministry would not only change the lives of those who are served, but also those who serve. Lives can be complementary to one another and thrive.
With blessings from God, the number of students expanded from about a dozen to more than 400 students and parents within a few years. During this period, we witnessed lives changed, from helpless to hopeful, from negative to positive, from sadness to joy and peace.
Mr and Mrs Mui felt that there was room for expansion for the ministry to serve more needy families. Through the support and assistance from Mongkok Church, they decided to establish an independent charity organisation to provide suitable assistance to more needy families.
S.O.A.R. Education Foundation was established in December 2020 and registered as a charitable organisation in Hong Kong. The Church of Christ in China Mongkok Church has given us great support by giving us a concessionary rent for our office at 12/F of the Mongkok Christian Centre. Our volunteer team has also expanded to more than 100 people, and at the same time the number of parents and children receiving our services are also constantly increasing.
